Introduction to the Course

Welcome to MIS/ ENTRP 375. My name is Avimanyu (Avi) Datta and I am a doctoral candidate in the college of business, Washington State University. This is a very exciting course that intersects information systems, entrepreneurship, strategy and so forth.

Course Description

The rapid deployment and diffusion of information technology (IT) in conjunction with the growth of the Internet has fundamentally altered the way that organizations around the world conduct business in the 21st century. This concept is often referred to as electronic commerce or, a more inclusive term, E-Business. To be successful in the e-business arena, organizations will need people who are knowledgeable about the opportunities and challenges associated with IT, e-business, and international business. The MIS375 course has been designed to help business students increase their knowledge in these areas so that they may better understand how organizations may formulate a global e-business strategy and business plan.

The readings and assignments will introduce a number of key concepts and timely issues related to global e-business and the entrepreneurial process. Specific topics to be addressed include: e-business models, technical infrastructure, assessing entrepreneurial abilities, defining the entrepreneurial process, recognizing the characteristics of e-business and the role e-business plays in the global economy, understanding the opportunities and challenges of conducting business internationally, developing new e-business ideas, creating a business plan, securing startup financing, facing various startup challenges including hiring key staff and selecting technologies, marketing an e-business and its products or services, corporate social responsibility issues in operating a business, developing an e-business Web site, and securing an e-business’s assets from various internal and external threats. In addition to the assignments and reading material, students will gain hands-on experience with e-business applications though assignments involving technology as well as a group project.

I am sure you will love the course as much I will enjoy teaching it. I look forward to your presense this semester, and also your candid feedback to make the course more effective.
